Henry Ford, Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Jacob Marley, Bob Ewell, Mr. Pinky from Hairspray—the list goes on and on. These are just a few of the many roles that David Ardrey played for Charleston Stage, often lighting up the stage at the Dock Street Theatre. As an actor, David wasn't one that craved the limelight. David was just as happy (perhaps happier) in a smaller supporting role rather than playing the lead. (Though he did that too to great acclaim.) But in every role he played, the real life David would disappear and an amazing, rich, detailed and thoroughly original character would take his place, bringing to life those special moments in plays and musicals that are often lost in the shadows.
David brightened rehearsals too and brought a delight to his work that was contagious and inspiring. The Charleston theatre community lost our friend and colleague David Ardrey on Thursday, January 19, 2012, but the bright light he brought to every production will remain forever a warm glow in our memories.
